India On Track To Overtake China As World’s Most Populous Country – UN
The United Nations announced on Wednesday, April 19, that India is on track to surpass China as the world’s most populous nation by the middle of this year, adding nearly three million people.
India’s population is estimated to be 1.4286 billion, compared to China’s 1.4257 billion, corresponding to the UNFPA’s “State of the World Population Report, 2023” demographic data.
With an estimated 340 million people, the United States is ranked a distant third in terms of population. The most recent investigation from the international organization did not set a timeframe for when India would overtake China in terms of population, although the move is anticipated to occur shortly.
UN population officials claimed that it was impossible to pinpoint a time due to “uncertainty” surrounding the data coming from China and India, particularly given that India’s previous census was performed in 2011 and that the country’s upcoming one, which was scheduled for 2021 but has been delayed due to the pandemic.
India and China will make up more than one-third of the predicted 8.045 billion people on the planet, yet neither country’s population is growing any faster than the other, with China losing population at a considerably quicker rate.
For the first time in 60 years, China’s population decreased last year. According to government figures, India’s population has grown by 1.7% year on average over the previous ten years, but only 1.2% annually since 2011.
