Beauty vs Brawn In Delta Central: Omo Agege meets his match in a woman
The stage is set for what could be the most exciting senatorial contest in Delta Central Senatorial District with Senator Ovie Omo-Agege of the All Progressives Congress, APC pitched against Ms. Evelyn Oboro of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.
Omo-Agege, who is the incumbent was elected on the platform of Labour Party, LP before defecting to the APC about two years ago. His rival, Ms. Oboro, a two term member of the House of Representatives, caused a major upset in the state after she defeated Senator Ighoyota Amori in the PDP contest.
Amori was at one time regarded as the local godfather of the PDP in the state especially during the reign of Governor James Ibori in whose administration he served as commissioner for education among other offices.
His defeat in the hands of Mrs. Oboro came as a shock to some, but to keen observers of her politics, it was just another step for the beautiful but yet hard woman.
She had before her election to the House of Representatives in 2011 served as chairman of Uvwie Local Government Area, one of the most tough Local Government Areas in the state.
Presently serving her second term in the House of Representatives as the first female Urhobo to be so elected, suggestions are that she may have met her match in Omo-Agege who is coming into the contest against the background of the controversy over his role in the mace snatching incident in the Senate last year.
Remarkably, Omo-Agege has tried to wave the scandal away from him and it has had little impact on him. Sources say that Omo-Agege besides his moderate achievements in the Senate is also hoping to use security which lies in the hands of the Federal Government to push his second term aspiration.
The removal of the immediate past Inspector General of Police, Mr. Ibrahim Idris was said to have come as a blow to the APC in Delta State as they were said to have been relying much on his support to challenge the firm hold of the PDP in Delta State.
Her main challenger recently cried out that Omo-Agege was allocated 13 truckloads of policemen as against the one policeman she claimed to have.
For Mrs. Oboro she is said to be relying on the PDP structure to deliver her. A major threat to her bid, some fear could be lack of interest or possible anti-party acts by agents of Senator Amori.
But it is expected that Chief Ibori who she worked with as a special assistant could dissuade such a move. But political stakeholders are also confused on the intentions of Chief Ibori especially given the fact that Omo-Agege is also a protegee of his family.
