New Challenges To Emefiele’s Trial Emerge

Plans by the Federal Government to hold the suspended governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Mr Godwin Emefiele to account through a court trial may be a tall order on account of new challenges to his suspension.

Emefiele was suspended as governor of the Central Bank by President Bola Tinubu under legal provisions that are also being contested by some legal pundits among whom is civil rights and constitutional advocate, Clement Nwankwo.

Emefiele was suspended from office by President Tinubu late on Friday night and immediately arrested in Lagos and ferried to Abuja on Saturday. He has been accused of several allegations including terrorism and financial malpractises as CBN governor.

However, no specific allegation has been made against him. The broad allegations have also led to speculations that Emefiele who was allegedly the adopted candidate of the Muhammadu Buhari cabal as successor to the former administration was being persecuted for political considerations and not his performance in office.

Meanwhile, speaking on Channels Television late on Sunday, Mr Nwankwo while not endorsing Emefiele’s performance as CBN governor, however, queried the legal justification for his suspension and detention.

“There is no constitutional basis for the suspension of Mr Emefiele as governor of the Central Bank,” he told Channels Television. According to him the only provision to remove a CBN governor is a motion adopted by the approving authority, which is the Senate.

He, however, regretted that the Senate was not approached by the president as he said that the legislative body would have easily approved a recommendation to remove Emefiele and as such pave easier room for his trial.
