Students Loan postponement

Commendations from across the polity were flowing the way of President Bola Tinubu on Monday night after he fulfilled one of his daring campaign promises, to wit, to establish a students’ loan scheme with his assent to the Students Loan Bill.

GWG.ng reports that the bill was signed into law by the president with a handful of aides including Chief of Staff designate, Femi Gbajabiamila, Dele Alake and Tunde Rahman in attendance.

The law according to Gbajabiamila provides for the establishment of the Nigerian Education Fund, domiciled with the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) from which qualified applicants can access education loans through the commercial banks in the country.

Among those who hailed the development on Monday was social media activist, Dr Kemi Olunloyo among others.

GWG.ng gathered some of the comments trailing the move by the president.

I want to commend President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for signing the interest free student loan bill. It was a commendable initiative. Those of you defaulting on loans will not be eligible. It is time we become honest and transparent in this area of education.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu (GCFR) a few minutes ago signed into law, The student loan bill, which provides for interest-free loans to indigent Nigerian students. Good news.

From now on… No more begging for school fees on twitter. You can now apply and Govt will PAY your school fees. All the Youths will benefit from this

Student Loan Bill is a good thing and President BOLA Ahmed Tinubu made a good process for the student or youth to have a solid education. My question is how will they pay back after school?  Or else some will take the loan and drop out to book Ekiti game to become a millionaire

The Government could have solved the massive unemployment crisis the country is facing before signing the Student Loan Bill. Taking a loan just to graduate and join the long list of unemployed graduates? I’m sorry but this is an excellent bill signed at the wrong timing “IMHO”.
