Bayelsa: Diri’s Camp In Joyous Mood After Decisive Win Of Southern Ijaw LGA
Supporters of Governor Douye Diri were in a jubilant state on Monday afternoon after he took a commanding lead in the Bayelsa State governorship election as he was confirmed winner of the poll in the decisive Southern Ijaw Local Government Area.
Governor Diri’s win of Southern Ijaw was announced as the collation of results for the Bayelsa governorship election resumed Monday afternoon.
GWG.ng reports that Diri who is the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate for the poll, scored 24,685 votes, beating his closest rival Timipre Sylva of the All Progressives Congress (APC) who polled 18, 174 votes.
The Labour Party (LP) came third with 119 votes out of the 50,153 accredited voters.
Earlier, the collation of results was hurriedly adjourned after an aggrieved party agent disrupted proceedings.
Resumption of collation of results, earlier scheduled to resume at 12pm, had started behind schedule. Midway into the collation of results from Brass Local Government Area, aggrieved party agents started querying the figures being announced.
One of them, the agent of Accord Party (AP), eventually engaged in a scuffle with the agent of the All Progressives Congress (APC)
The State Returning Officer, Prof Faruq Kuta, had to hurriedly announce the adjournment of proceedings by one hour when security agents had a tough time dousing the brawl as the two aggrieved men rushed out of the collation building to continue their fight outside.
So far, results from seven of the eight LGAs have been announced with the incumbent, Douye Diri of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), in the lead having won five local governments while APC’s Timipre Sylva got two.
