Governor Charles Soludo of Anambra State has rescued a former Nigerian tennis champion, Tanya Okpa, found loitering the street of Awka, Anambra State by an unidentified man.

A viral video circulating the internet captures Tanya in a mentally ill state with a wound on one of her legs. In a conversation with the unidentified man, she introduced herself and stated that she was a former lawn tennis player for Nigeria. She lamented that she has been labeled “a prostitute” by the people in the area and asked to return to her country but considers herself an Igbo lady.

In a statement released by Governor Soludo on Sunday via his X official account, he disclosed,

“Tanya Okpala (Fmr Tennis champion) is now in the custody of the Anambra State Government. She was with the Commissioner of Women Affairs when my wife spoke with her on the phone”.

He assured that Tanya will be reunited with her family,

“My government will ensure her rehabilitation and fruitful reunion with her daughter and family.”

Nasiry Abdulrasheed said,

“Why are we not caring for our stars? Too many people have contributed in some manner to the success of this great country, only to find themselves on the streets begging for food. Is it so difficult to put in place a policy or mechanism that allows the Sports Ministry @OwanEnoh or Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs @fmha_pa to assist anyone found in such a situation, especially when they have represented the country in a positive way? President @officialABAT @NGRPresident, please look into this.”
