I Did Not Spite Funke Akindele – Toyin Abraham
The revelation by the National Centre for Disease Control, NCDC of A-grade actress, Toyin Abraham as an ambassador for its COVID-19 campaign has sparked off insinuations that she may have replaced Funke Akindele as its brand ambassador.
Ms. Abraham was shown in a tweet on the handle of the NCDC speaking in Yoruba how one should protect oneself from contracting coronavirus.
The emergence of Abraham follows Ms. Akindele’s brush with the law after she was found guilty of breaching the social distancing guidelines she had canvassed as Dettol ambassador working to spread the messages of the NCDC.
The development has inevitably sparked controversy on social media with some Nigerians labeling Ms. Abraham for usurping Akindele after she ran into trouble with the law.
But responding, Ms. Abaraham who had before Akindele’s troubles raised awareness on the COVID-19 pandemic said her involvement was never to spite anyone as insinuated.
“It has just been brought to my attention that blogs are reporting that I am now NCDC ambassador. Implying that I have been used to replace a colleague. That line of thought necessitate I put this out there.
“I am not an ambassador to NCDC. I do not like the narrative that I am trying to take advantage of a bad situation. I support the campaign against Covid-19, I appeared on a video campaign against the pandemic but please let’s not drag another person down. Thank you.”
In the video shared on the NCDC website, Abaraham had urged all Nigerians to make their contributions towards checking the COVID-19 pandemic.
