Kyari Is First Chief Of Staff To Die In Office

Mallam Abba Kyari on Friday became the first chief of staff to Nigeria’s president to die in office.

His death was announced by Mr. Femi Adesina, Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity in a press statement, on Saturday.

He said, “The Presidency regrets to announce the passage of the Chief of Staff to the President, Mallam Abba Kyari.

“The deceased had tested positive to the ravaging COVID-19, and had been receiving treatment. But he died on Friday, April 17, 2020.

“Funeral arrangements will be announced shortly.”

He becomes the most prominent Nigerian to die from the pandemic. Before the advent of the pandemic, Mallam Kyari had been whispered to also have underlying health issues for which he had been reported to have sought treatment abroad.

He contracted the COVID-19 virus following a trip to Germany and the United Kingdom. Following his test positive test for the virus, he sought treatment in a private facility in Lagos.

His death on Friday happened on a day that Nigeria remarkably recorded the highest number of positive cases at 51 and highest number of mortalities of four from the pandemic.
