JUST IN: Delta Take-It-Back Coordinator, Aghogho Released After 600 Days In Detention 

Human rights activist and Delta State Take-It-Back Coordinator, Ighorhiohwunu Aghogho has been released on bail after spending over 600 days on awaiting trial over call to probe child trafficking allegations against some government officials in the state.

Aghogho was released at about 12pm on Friday and was led out of the Federal Correctional Centre Warri (Prison) by a Federal High Court clerk and his counsel, Mrs Eloho Chalele.

Aghogho popularly called  “human right” by fellow inmates and warders in the Warri Prison was given a loud ovation by inmates and warders at the point of exit from the prison.

“Human right remember to fight for us o,” some of the inmates and warders cried out.

Aghogho was arrested in a gestapo style when the Assistant Inspector -General of Police (AIG) in charge of Zone 5 Benin, late AIG Tanko Jimeta could not provide a police vehicle to visit the crime scenes where children were allegedly trafficked in their thousands as claimed by Aghogho.

Aghogho the complainant was turned to the accused by the police and was charged for giving false information to the police, cyberstalking among others and was first arraigned before the Chief Magistrate in charge of Magistrate Court 1 Asaba.

The judge, P U Nsolo (Mrs), remanded him on holden charge at Ogwashi-uku Prison in June 2022 and later he was tranferred to Warri Prison for the trial of the charges at the Federal High Court Warri.

SaharaReporters on March 12 reported how the Delta Chief Judge and Justice Sani of the Federal High Court sitting in Warri Judicial Division varied and reviewed the bail conditions of Aghogho, detained for over 22 months over his call to probe child trafficking by government officials in the State.

Aghogho’s counsel, Elohor Chalele-Edafeareadhe on 16th February, 2024 told Justice Sani that; “It is on record that the Defendant has attempted to meet the bail condition in the past but he was frustrated along the process due to the fact that the bail was excessive.

“This time around, the Defendant’s elder brother has deposed to an affidavit that he can take the Defendant on bail with his title deed with respect to his own landed property.

“The Defendant’s elder brother is the best surety to take the Defendant on bail considering the circumstances of the case.”

Delivering the Ruling on the 1st of March, 2024, the court ruled: “The bail conditions granted on 26 April, 2023 to the Defendant/Applicant is hereby reviewed/varied to be a deed of conveyance.”

“I also order that the deed of conveyance should be registered,” Justice M.I Sani said.

It was also gathered that the Federal High Court officials also commenced verification of the document (registered deed) submitted by the surety as contained in the bail conditions.

The case has been adjourned to 18th April, 2024, for hearing.
