Paternity Leave Doubts As Boris Johnson’s Fiancee Gives Birth

Prime Minister Boris Johnson and his fiancee Carrie Symonds on Wednesday announced the birth of their son.

A spokeswoman for the PM and his partner said both mother and baby are “doing very well”, the BBC reported on Wednesday.

The PM’s office was, however, quiet on earlier plans for the prime minister to proceed on paternity leave in the light of the ravaging COVID-19 pandemic.

GreenWhiteGreen reports that this would be the third son born to a serving Prime Minister in recent history. Mr. Blair and his wife Cherie had a baby in May 2000 while Mr. David Cameron and his wife had a baby in 2010 while serving as prime minister.

The prime minister who was recently discharged from the hospital after falling ill to COVID-19 witnessed the birth at a local hospital in London.

Congratulations have poured from across the world for the couple who were only formally engaged last February following the prime minister’s divorce from his second wife, Barrister Marina Wheeler.

The new born boy is the fifth child for the 55 year old Johnson following the four children with Ms. Wheeler. The new baby is also the first baby for Ms. Symonds, 32, a political activist who is a daughter to one of the founders of Britain’s Independent newspaper, Matthew Symonds.

 Ms Symonds is the first unmarried woman to live in Downing Street and follows the tenure of the last bachelor prime minister, Edward Heath in the seventies.

Following the delivery there were questions on Wednesday whether the prime minister would go ahead with his plans for a paternity leave.

Mr. Johnson had in the past pledged to go on a paternity leave should Ms. Symonds give birth. However, following his bout with COVID-19 and the pandemic still ravaging the country the prime minister’s office was yet to give an indication to that direction following the delivery.
