By Chuks Ekpeneru
Though the 2020 governorship election in Ondo State is just by the corner, Governor Rotimi Akeredolu says he is putting the issue of the election to the back-burner given the rage of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Ondo State as at April 30 had nine cases of COVID-19 including two recent ones that came from policemen who came from Lagos to the state for treatment.
The governor is presently engaged in a game of wits with fellow stakeholders in the All Progressives Congress, APC some of who are fighting to stop the governor’s second term aspiration. The stakeholders opposed to the governor who have grouped under the Unity Forum led by the former deputy governor of the state, Alhaji Ali Olanusi have pledged to produce a consensus aspirant to stop Akeredolu in the APC primaries.
Asked in an interview how he was responding to the threat from the internal opposition, Governor Akeredolu said he had put issues of the election to the back-burner.
“The election is on the backburner now, let us concentrate on lives now. If we have COVID-19 how will we be able to do election?
“I am not thinking about that now, I am only thinking about the lives of our people now when we get to that bridge we will cross it, that is not a problem.”
