Mbappe Equals Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s UEFA Champions League Goals Record

Paris Saint-Germain’s star forward, Kylian Mbappe, achieved a remarkable feat on Tuesday, equaling the UEFA Champions League goalscoring record set by the club’s former striker, Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

Mbappe’s historic moment came during PSG’s quarter-final clash against Barcelona, where he showcased his prowess by netting a brace. The French captain converted a penalty in the 61st minute before capitalizing on an error by Jules Kounde to score his second goal in the 89th minute. PSG secured a 6-4 aggregate victory over Barcelona at full-time.

With these two goals, Mbappe’s tally in the Champions League now stands at 48 goals in 71 appearances, a figure that matches Ibrahimovic’s impressive record of 48 goals in 124 games for PSG.

The 25-year-old forward’s stellar performance has positioned him to potentially surpass Ibrahimovic’s record in the upcoming semi-final clash against Borussia Dortmund. Football fans eagerly anticipate Mbappe’s next move as he continues to etch his name in the annals of Champions League history.

The Mbappe record came as it was announced that the opening ceremony of the 2024 Paris Olympics might not take place along the Seine River if the security situation in Europe worsens.

French President Emmanuel Macron told broadcasters BFMTV in an interview on Monday.

“We can do it and we will do it,” Macron stressed, but he added that plans B and C are being prepared.

The French president indicated that, in the event of a threat, the opening ceremony will be “limited to the Trocadéro,” or even the Stade de France stadium as a precaution.

The opening ceremony will take place on July 26 and for the first time outdoors.

Around 160 boats will take the athletes on a six-kilometre route across the Seine along the most beautiful sights in Paris, from the Pont d’Austerlitz to the Trocadéro.

Some 326,000 spectators are expected to attend the ceremony.
