Our Unity In Edo State Should Be Paramount

I’ve seen the exchanges on social media with regards to the forthcoming gubernatorial election in Edo state.

I appeal that we make our campaign for our preferred candidates issue based. Edo State and the country have been governed by both PDP and APC parties. We have enough of their achievements or non-performance to write on, and campaign with.

We should not be abusive, and neither should we allow our personal interest to be-cloud our sense of fairness in judgement. I also appeal that we do not drag our traditional institutions into politics. We must preserve our culture and traditions. They are our heritage that we remain extremely proud of.

All the gubernatorial candidates’ family background, academic and work experience, knowledge and understanding of governance, and human interaction are all open for our scrutiny and use, to market our preferred candidates. They are all presumed qualified to run for office of governor. It is now our prerogative to choose the best from among them considering their experience, education and what they would bring to governance, aware that what is at stake is further development and growth of Edo State.

Politics is a game of interest. Once there’s a clash of interest between people, there is bound to be disagreement, which shouldn’t be toxic and ought to be resolved after elections for the common good.

My politics of no bitterness – aguiyekampe – remains my hallmark.

For me, the Asue Ighodalo/Osarodion Ogie ticket remains the best option for moving Edo State forward, and improving on Godwin Obaseki’s achievements. You may agree or disagree with me, but disagreement is not enough reason to rain abuses on one another. In voicing out my support for Asue Ighodalo and Osarodion Ogie, I have received some bashing and disrespect to my person. I choose not to come down to their level because my traducers are free to express their opinions, through which the larger audience can judge their character and inadequate upbringing.

May God continue to bless Edo State.
