Controversy As Nigerian Lady Says Bible Asks Men To Take Wives’ Surnames After Marriage (Video)

Woman says men ought to take their wife's last name

A Nigerian woman has come under fire after asserting that a man should take his wife’s last name after marriage.

The lady who quoted the Bible to prove her claim was, however, vague on whether her husband took her surname at the point of marriage.

Quoting Gen 2:24: “Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh” the woman further interpreted that the bible verse also meant that the man should leave everything about his mother and father, including his father’s name, to take up his wife’s last name.

A video she posted on social media captured her saying, “The bible says in no vague terms, therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother and cleave unto his wife.

“So you are supposed to leave your mother and father and everything that has to do with them, including their name which suggests that you should adopt your wife’s last name, not the other way round.

The woman asked, “Why is nobody talking about this?”

“Nobody talks about that because it does not fit into the narrative that men are trying to push,” she claimed.

The woman’s statement has since generated fiery reactions on social media. See some comments on X:

@GideonAlex7 commented, “Ozuor that has failed to understand that her own mother used to have a last name, and the precious last name which she now happens to bear, was accepted by her mother over her initial parent’s. Nne your argument is so flawed.”

@bukachampion said, “Your last name is still a man’s name, Olodo.”

@agentpukka opined, “That is your own myopic understanding. When you marry, let your husband change his name for yours.”

@Sphinx_Diff reacted, “Sometimes I dey feel like say this wig dey block breeze from touching people brain. Because the moment they wear am, you go begin cap nonsense.”
