Demolition Pandemic As Lagos Govt Serves 48-Hour Notice

A demolition pandemic has struck, after the Lagos Environment commissioner published a 48-hour contravention notice to owners of properties built on Right-Of-Way drainage channels in Jakande Estate, Oke-Afa, Isolo.

This notice was contained in a statement by the Lagos commissioner titled, “LAGOS STATE ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT AND PROTECTION LAW, 2017 CONTRAVENTION NOTICE” and dated, May 13.

The statement listed some of the revealed contraventions to include:

“a. Dumped or caused to be dumped refuse or waste/toxic substance within or inside the drainage channel,

b. Construct or caused to be constructed a structure to block the drainage channel canal.”

“Constructor caused to be constructed build house on Right-Of-Way (ROW) of drainage channel canal

“If you dispute the above contravention(s), you are requested to bring all relevant documents in support of your case including Drainage Clearance Certificate to the underline within. 4.8 hours of the service of this notice on you.

 “If you do not dispute the contravention, you are hereby to remove the contravention(s) or make good the Strom Water Drainage System to its original condition,” the statement added.

The Lagos government also warned that failure to remove the said contraventions within 40 hours from the date of service of the notice, the said contravention(s) would result in demolition.

Reacting to the developments, netizens went to social media to give their reactions:

edmond_westt said, “This Jakande/ Isheri-Oshun na my area be that. People don buy and build river channels finish and sadly na Igbo people dey fall victims of these lands. If people build river channels and canal finish, na where water wan dey follow.”

jackfranklin666 recalled, “Now I know why a man almost sold me his duplex in this estate for 30 million naira last year in the name of traveling abroad. .I knew something was wrong somewhere.”
