Gov Abiodun Bows To Public Pressure, Vows To Repair 120 Roads In Ogun State

In response to a wave of criticism from concerned citizens on social media, Governor Dapo Abiodun has pledged to repair 120 roads across 20 local government areas in Ogun State.

For years, residents of Ogun have struggled with deteriorating major roads, impacting both commercial and private transportation. The state, which shares multiple border communities with Lagos State, suffers in comparison to Lagos, which boasts better connecting roads.

The worst-affected areas are the communities bordering Lagos, but the issue extends to the heart of the state, including Abeokuta, where many roads are in poor condition. This situation has led to widespread dissatisfaction among residents, who have recently intensified their criticism of Governor Abiodun on social media.

One of the leading voices in the campaign is Hauwa Allahbura, an X user who started the hashtag #Dapofixogunroads. Allahbura has been actively sharing photos and videos of the deplorable roads, urging the government to take action.

The state government initially responded by noting that many of the images circulating online depicted roads managed by the Federal Government. They also listed several road projects completed by the Abiodun administration. However, this response did not satisfy the campaigners, who continued to press the government for improvements.

In a statement on Wednesday, July 3, 2024, the Commissioner of Works, Engr Ade Akinsanya, announced that the Abiodun administration had begun extensive road rehabilitation and construction. The prioritization of these projects will be based on available funds and the economic importance of the roads.

According to Akinsanya, stakeholders submitted a list of 120 roads across the state’s 20 local government areas. This initiative is part of Governor Abiodun’s commitment to making Ogun more attractive to local and foreign investors. The governor has involved various stakeholders, including royal fathers, lawmakers, local government chairmen, community leaders, and religious leaders, to identify critical roads in need of immediate attention.

The Commissioner confirmed that rehabilitation work has started on some roads, with contractors scheduled to begin on the remaining ones soon. Additionally, Governor Abiodun has secured collaboration from the Federal Government to rehabilitate and reconstruct 14 more roads.

Akinsanya provided a list of roads to be jointly rehabilitated with the Federal Ministry of Works, including Laderin-Train Station (Phase 1), Adesanolu Road, Mowe, Liberty Road, Oru Ijebu, Babcock Road via Ilisan market road, Ayegbami road, Iperu, Safetedo Street, Iperu, Odo-Egbe Junction/Ereko/Ondo Road Junction, Major Thompson Road, Sagamu, Methodist Church, Iperu, and Awokoya Street, Ijebu.

@onemindmickey: I have documentation of bad roads in Ogun State since this Dapo guy came in 2019. In some locations like Wawa, isẹri & Magboro, they use Canoe when it rains or floods. See pictures here. I have videos & all. That guy is just busy doing nothing.
