Protest BBNaija

A prominent human rights advocate, Kingsley Thompson, has sparked reactions on social media after he called for the suspension of the BBNaija season 9 premiere, which is already scheduled to coincide with the highly anticipated nationwide protest against the prevailing economic woes in Nigeria.

The objective of the protest themed, #EndBadGovernance and scheduled from August 1 to August 10, 2024, seeks to challenge Nigerian leaders to address the issue of hunger and continoys inflation in the nation.

Meanwhile, the new season of BBNaija made its debut on Sunday, and will last 10 weeks, with the grand finale airing on October 6, 2024.

The coincidence of these two significant events has sparked fierce criticism among netizens, who claim that the show’s scheduling is an unacceptable distraction from the pressing socioeconomic challenges at hand.

Thompson, identified as on X as @Justkingss, strongly attacked the scheduling of the BBNaija debut.

He contends that the show’s debut at a key time for national movement reveals a troubling misalignment of priorities among the youth.

Thompson, speaking for many who share his view, is calling for the suspension of the reality TV show this year.

He maintains that, given the gravity of the current economic crisis, the nation’s focus should concentrate on demanding change, not on fleeting enjoyment.

He tweeted, “Bringing BBN at this critical time in our country shows how we misplaced priorities.,

“I speak for all Nigerians that BBN should suspend their show this year, we don’t want it.”

They accuse them of purposely diverting the youth’s attention away from important concerns.

superCleanworks(m) reacted: “After all the online gragra you will still see the same Nigerians, subscribe, tweeting and reposting BBN crap.”

@Valadoms reacted, “Since the time of the Roman Empire entertainment has been a tool for distraction. But we are wiser now.”
