Jide Oyekunle, the correspondent for the Abuja chapter of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), one of the journalists covering the protest against hardship had his mobile phone seized by police officers while covering the demonstration at the Eagle Square in Abuja.

In a video clip posted by @TheCable, Oyekunle, who besides serving as the Nigeria Union of Journalists chairman in Abuja also serves as a correspondent with the Daily Independent Newspaper, was documenting the protest when the altercaiton occurred.

He claimed that the FCT Commissioner of Police, Benneth Igwe, personally seized his phone and instructed officers to arrest journalists present at the scene.

This action has raised significant questions about press freedom and the treatment of media professionals during the unrest. The seizure and subsequent orders for arrest come amid a broader crackdown on media coverage of the protests, which have been marked by increasing tensions and heavy-handed responses from security forces.

GWG.ng reports that the arrest of journalists covering the protest in Nigeria was not expected to arise given the public presentation of the crime fighting expertise of the incumbent commissioner of police in the FCT.

As the situation continues to develop, calls for accountability and the protection of journalists’ rights are growing louder, with many advocating for a more transparent and respectful approach to media coverage during such critical events.
