Onanuga over Food Inflation

Bayo Onanuga, President Bola Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, has come under fire for his claim that food inflation in Nigeria is declining.

Onanuga said that prices for yam, tomatoes, and other foodstuffs are dropping significantly. In a post on X, he stated, “Food inflation is coming down as prices of yam, tomatoes decline massively,” highlighting that a big basket of tomatoes in Ketu market has fallen from N150,000 to around N55,000 to N60,000, and that pepper prices have decreased from N55,000 to N25,000.

However, his comments have been met with widespread criticism. Many Nigerians have questioned his awareness of the market realities. Social media users have pointedly asked if Onanuga visits the market, with comments like, “Did you go to the market?” and “Are we supposed to celebrate N60k for a basket of tomatoes when it used to be N1,500 to N3,500 before APC came into power?”

Others argue that while some prices have dropped, the overall cost of living remains high. One user remarked, “The drop is nice, but it’s not across the board. Many are still struggling with the high cost of living,” while another added, “APC are just making suffering look normal to us.” The backlash reflects a deep skepticism about the government’s portrayal of economic improvements amidst ongoing financial challenges for many Nigerians.

See some reactions below:
@SamuelIse3: “I said it last night that Bayo
@aonanuga1956 have not yet seen this post ,that as soon as he see the post, he is going to rush and post it, just to make it look like Tinubu is working, and really really here he come 😂😂 old man”

@Oforma19: “Tinubu influencer did you go to the market?”

@princedominic21: “Are you a blogger or a presidential media personel?
Did you verify the authenticity of the information Abi you want to pay another 5bn 😂😂”

@Ovoh_of_Lagos: “From 8k to 150k to 60k
APC are all big fuuuuus
Just imagine”

@Ovoh_of_Lagos: “You dy go market at all
Cho Cho Cho
So people wey buy at the costly rate should sell cheap??
Apc maths”

@cash_craft002: “The drop is nice, but it’s not across the board· Many are still struggling with the high cost of living. God help us 😥”

@African_unifier: “Which side of the market ? Or you just wake up to spill trasħ 🗑️”

@ETOfficially: “This is really silly. Are the prices reverting to the pre-subsidy removal rates? If something costs N50 and then wemt up to N150 due to inflation. If it crashes to N80 is that “coming down”?”

@Ovoh_of_Lagos: “Apc are just making suffering look normal to us”

@YakubTijani2: “Things like this don’t trend. If it was increased to N250k, emergency lovers of Nigeria 🇳🇬 would have been everywhere”

@jejeoflagos: “Hopefully it’s time to harvest petrol soon. Which season does that start? So prices can fall massively as well.”

@princedominic21: “But wait, apart from being shameless are we supposed to be celebrating 60k as the price of tomato basket?
Should we remind you that it’s was selling for 1500-3500 max before APC came in to power?”

@swaagsphotos: “The only person I will believe on this food price reduction matter is
@MensahEstherOmo”

@NBennymart: “Massively to where ?
Did I not restock just two days ago .
150k couldn’t buy anything sizeable..
Ewu”

@Oladapomikky1: “Enter market yourself to confirm….. No be by Twitter hype”

@revi_ofthehills: “They have taken from us they are now giving us peanuts. Most Nigerians don’t have a choice because they are hungry. For instance you are playing a game and you are in level 10. Then I’ll now come and threaten you that I’ll seize the game from you but in the end I take you to level 6 and then I start bringing you up very slowly. You can remain in level 7 for 100 years.”
