Senator Abbo Monthly Senator not a lot

Former Senator Elisha Abbo has sparked controversy after revealing that Nigerian senators earn N29 million monthly, but he doesnā€™t consider it a significant amount of money.

Abbo made these remarks during an appearance on Arise Television, where he discussed the ongoing debate surrounding lawmakers’ salaries and allowances.

Abbo clarified that when he served as a senator, his base salary was slightly over one million naira, but he took home a total of N14.4 million each month, including allowances.

Despite this substantial sum, he claimed it wasn’t a large amount of money, especially when compared to what he earned from his business ventures.

His comments have sparked widespread criticism, with many Nigerians expressing disbelief that he would refer to such a high income as “not a lot.”

When asked about the current earnings of senators, Abbo confirmed that they receive N29 million per month, including allowances, but he reiterated that the figure seems large only on paper. “I am saying this as a very honest man,” he stated, emphasizing that the National Assembly is often unfairly criticized, and that he doesn’t consider the monthly pay of senators excessive.

Abbo further defended his position by saying, “It is not humongous,” even as the show’s host highlighted the stark contrast between the senators’ pay and the economic struggles faced by many Nigerians.

Reactions to his comments have been varied, with some people criticizing his perspective and others questioning the justification for such high salaries. One user, @_ValentinoXO, sarcastically suggested, “Then go back to the job then.” Another, @Z2Htv, expressed confusion, saying, “I still don’t understand what they are doing to be paid such an amount of money. He should resign and go back to his previous job then.”

Others, like @CA_YoutuberBoy, were more critical of Nigerian politicians in general, stating, “The way Nigerian politicians lie like little children, no sophistication whatsoever.” Many users also pointed out the vast difference between the senators’ earnings and the average income of regular government workers.

The debate continues, with many Nigerians expressing frustration over the substantial salaries and allowances received by their lawmakers amidst the economic challenges facing the country.
