Emir Gobir Bawa

Tragedy struck on Wednesday as the Emir of Gobir, Alhaji Isa Muhammad Bawa, was brutally murdered by bandits in Sokoto State.

The monarch had been held captive for an extended period, during which his captors demanded a ransom for his release.

In a distressing video that circulated online a few days before his death, the Emir was seen pleading with the government to intervene and secure his release. The video showed him visibly injured, having been beaten by the kidnappers, who issued a chilling ultimatum: pay the ransom within 24 hours, or he would be killed.

Despite frantic efforts to raise the ransom, the tragic news of the Emir’s death was confirmed on Wednesday. His son, Alhaji Shu’aibu Gwanda Gobir, who holds the traditional title of Magajin Garin Gobir (Mayor of Gobir Municipal), disclosed the heartbreaking development during an interview with DW Radio.

According to Shu’aibu, the bandits had agreed to release the Emir in exchange for a ransom of N60 million. However, just two days ago, after the money had been raised, the family received a devastating call informing them that the Emir had been killed. As a result, they did not proceed with the ransom payment.

The murder of Alhaji Isa Muhammad Bawa marks a grim chapter in the ongoing security crisis in Nigeria, where banditry and kidnapping have become increasingly rampant.
