In response to escalating tensions between Nigerians and South Africans, ride-hailing giant Bolt has taken decisive action by blocking numerous accounts involved in a spate of fake ride requests and cancellations.

The company has also imposed restrictions on inter-country ride requests following a surge of malicious activities between the two nations.

The controversy began earlier this week when online users from both Nigeria and South Africa engaged in a new “supremacy battle,” with each side targeting the other’s e-hailing services. South Africans reportedly initiated the conflict by booking rides in Nigeria and canceling them upon the drivers’ arrival at the pick-up locations. In retaliation, Nigerians employed similar tactics by booking and canceling rides in South Africa, leading to widespread disruption for drivers.

In a statement released by Yahaya Mohammed, Country Manager for Bolt Nigeria, the company acknowledged the issue and detailed the steps taken to address it. “Bolt is aware of the fake ride request incident between some individuals in Nigeria and South Africa,” the statement read. “We have successfully implemented measures to resolve this issue, ensuring the integrity and safety of our platform.”

Bolt has conducted a thorough investigation into the matter and introduced enhanced security protocols to prevent further misuse of its platform. “We have restricted inter-country ride requests and have taken swift action by blocking those responsible for this malicious activity from the Bolt app,” Mohammed explained.

The company also expressed gratitude to its driver-partners, acknowledging the challenges they faced during this period. “We understand the impact this situation has had on our driver-partners in Nigeria and South Africa,” the statement continued. “We are committed to ensuring a safe, reliable, and secure experience for all members of our community.”

Bolt concluded by reaffirming its dedication to supporting its drivers and maintaining the trust of both riders and drivers on its platform: “We thank our driver-partners for their patience and professionalism during this time and remain dedicated to supporting them in every possible way.”
