Nigerian activist and politician, Omoyele Sowore, has drawn intense criticism after speaking out against the ongoing cyber conflict between Nigerians and South Africans.

GWG.ng reports that the online feud erupted when netizens from both countries began disrupting digital transportation services, particularly through the Bolt app, as part of a retaliation campaign.

In a statement released on his social media platforms, Sowore condemned the actions of the Nigerian participants, describing the situation as “Cyber Xenophobia” and calling for an immediate end to the attacks. He emphasized that such behavior is as harmful as physical xenophobia and could have severe consequences for both South Africans and Nigerians, particularly those living abroad.

“I totally condemn the cyber war on South African internet infrastructure by a group of netizens from ‘Nigeria’ disrupting online transportation services for a majority of fellow Africans because of the misconduct of a few South Africans. It is unacceptable, and I want it stopped henceforth,” Sowore declared.

He further stressed the importance of unity among African nations, stating, “Cyber Xenophobia is as dangerously reprehensible as mental and physical Xenophobia! There are millions of South Africans, as well as Nigerians in the diaspora, that would be adversely affected by this terrible conduct. #AfricanUnite #RevolutionNow.”

However, Sowore’s plea has not been well-received by many Nigerian netizens. His comment section was quickly flooded with backlash, with critics questioning his authority to intervene and command Nigerians to stop their actions. Some respondents expressed their frustration, suggesting that Sowore had overstepped by telling them how to respond to the ongoing tensions.

Read some netizens’ reactions to Sowore’s statement below;
