The proposed meeting between the Federal Government, FG, and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) initially scheduled for Monday (today), has been rescheduled to August 28.

According to Channels Television on Monday, the ASUU President, Emmanuel Osodeke, confirmed that the meeting which was previously announced by the Minister of Education on Friday will no longer be held on Monday.

Although no reason was given for the postponement, the meeting is now expected to take place on Wednesday, August 28

A week ago, GWG.ng reported that the  (ASUU) had issued a 21-day strike notice to the Federal Government, signaling a potential resumption of industrial action if their long-standing demands are not met.

The move came in response to ongoing disputes over the non-implementation of key agreements between the union and the government.

Among grievances highlighted by ASUU ahead of the meeting with the FG is the non-implementation of the 2009 re-negotiated agreements, which have been pending over the years. Additionally, the union is demanding the settlement of accumulated academic allowances and the disbursement of the revitalization fund, which was part of a Needs Assessment Report that recommended raising N200 billion annually for five years to improve university infrastructure. Since 2013, only one installment of the fund has been paid.

ASUU also criticized the government’s approval of new universities without providing adequate funding, arguing that this has exacerbated the challenges facing Nigeria’s higher education sector.
