Students of the University of Ibadan have once again taken to the streets in protest against a significant increase in their school fees, marking another chapter in the ongoing dispute over rising education costs.

The protest, which erupted early Friday morning, was sparked by the recent decision of the governing council of the University of Ibadan to approve a substantial hike in fees during a meeting held on Thursday.

This move has intensified the frustration among students, leading them to announce and commence a protest to demand a reversal of the decision.

Speaking on the condition of anonymity, a student from the Department of Human Nutrition expressed her dismay at the drastic increase in fees. She explained that students in her department paid N58,000 in the last academic session, but were shocked to find that the fees had more than doubled to N138,350 for the 2023/2024 session.

“In our department, Human Nutrition, during the 2022/2023 session, we paid N58,000, and now for the 2023/2024 session, we were asked to pay N138,350,” she revealed.

Another student from the Department of Animal Science echoed similar sentiments, noting that fees in his department had also seen a significant jump. He mentioned that last session’s fees of N70,000 had been raised to N150,000 for the current session, leaving many students unable to meet the new financial demands.

“In the Department of Animal Science, Faculty of Agriculture, we paid N70,000 for the 2022/2023 session, and now for the 2023/2024 session, it has been increased to N150,000. Most of us have not seen the money. We are yet to pay. The students are protesting now. We cannot attend lectures,” he said.

The students, in their frustration, have boycotted classes and are enforcing the shutdown of academic activities until their demands for fee reduction are met. The protest reflects the growing unrest among students who are grappling with the financial burden imposed by the increased fees, with many expressing concerns over their ability to continue their education under these new conditions.

The situation at the University of Ibadan is developing, and it remains to be seen how the administration will respond to the students’ demands.
