The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) is facing intense criticism from Nigerians who are calling on the Federal Government to permanently scrap the program following chaos in the registration of Prospective Corps Members, PCMs

The new agitation for the scrap of the NYSC follows widespread reports of disorganization and the mistreatment of prospective corps members (PCMs) who arrived for registration across various states, leaving many stranded and frustrated.

In Kano State, NYSC officials initially refused to conduct the registration of the arriving corps members. After hours of waiting, they claimed to have received an “order from above,” allowing only pregnant women and breastfeeding mothers to register, while others were sent back home after enduring long and tiring journeys.

Similarly, in Kebbi State, PCMs were turned away as the NYSC portal was reportedly locked, making registration impossible. The officials offered no clear timeline for when the process might resume, leaving the corps members in limbo.

The situation was equally dire in Benue State, where PCMs were left stranded for three days without any communication from NYSC officials. Despite repeated attempts to get clarity on the situation, the prospective corps members were met with silence and indifference.

In Niger State, the confusion took on another form. Corps members who had originally been slated to join Batch C were suddenly called up to camp with Stream II Batch B. Upon their arrival, however, they were informed that their deployment had been pushed back to Stream I Batch C, which is scheduled to begin in October or November. This abrupt change, according to multiple sources, caused considerable distress among the corps members, many of whom had traveled from distant states.

In Adamawa State, PCMs who arrived late were met with a shut gate. Regardless of the circumstances that led to their delayed arrival, including the dangerous conditions on Nigeria’s highways, they were sent back home without any assistance or empathy from NYSC officials.

The chaotic handling of this year’s registration process has prompted an outcry from PCMs, who have pleaded with NYSC for empathy and better organization. The lack of consideration for the challenges these young Nigerians face in reaching their assigned camps, coupled with the abrupt changes and poor communication, has led many to question the relevance of the NYSC program in its current form.

Amid these growing concerns, a significant portion of the Nigerian public is now demanding that the Federal Government scrap the NYSC program altogether. Critics argue that the program, once designed to foster unity and national integration, has become a logistical nightmare, plagued by inefficiency and a lack of proper management.

As the situation continues to unfold, the future of the NYSC program remains uncertain, with increasing calls for its overhaul or complete abolition growing louder by the day following the registration chaos.
