Victims of the tragic petrol tanker explosion that occurred on Sunday in Agaie Local Government Area of Niger State have been laid to rest in a mass burial.
The Director General of the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA), Abdullahi Baba-Arab, provided an update on the incident, confirming that 48 victims whose bodies were burnt beyond recognition had been buried collectively. Baba-Arab explained that emergency responders initially reported 30 fatalities but later uncovered 18 additional bodies during further search and rescue operations.
“Following further search and rescue operations, my agency discovered 18 more bodies which were also burnt to death and all the dead have been given mass burial,” he stated.
The tragic incident, which took place on Sunday morning along the Agaie-Bida Road, involved a fuel tanker and a trailer transporting cattle. The tanker was traveling on the Lapai-Agaie route when it collided with the trailer, which was en route to Lagos from Wudil, Kano State.
The accident occurred around 12:30 a.m., about 2 kilometers from Dendo Community in Agaie Local Government Area.
Baba-Arab further revealed that over 50 cattle were also burnt alive in the explosion, and two additional vehicles—a crane truck and a pickup van—were caught in the ensuing inferno.
