The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Kogi State has suspended former gubernatorial candidate, Senator Dino Melaye, over accusations of anti-party activities.

The suspension was announced in a memo from the party’s Ayetoro Gbede Ward 1 executive committee, dated September 12, 2024.

The memo revealed that the Ward Executive Committee met to review the findings of a disciplinary committee, which had been investigating allegations of misconduct and anti-party activities leveled against Melaye. The PDP had summoned him to appear before the Disciplinary Committee on August 20, 2024, in accordance with Article 57(4) of the party’s constitution. However, Melaye failed to attend the meeting, a move the party deemed as disrespectful to its authority.

The memo stated, “The Ward Party Executive Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ayetoro/Iluagba Ward 1 met on Friday, September 12, 2024, to review the report of the disciplinary committee set up to investigate allegations of anti-party activities against Senator Dino Melaye.”

Melaye’s refusal to appear before the committee was described as a severe breach of party discipline. His absence, along with the allegations of misconduct, led the Ward Executive Committee to conclude that his actions were damaging to the party’s image and credibility. As a result, the committee resolved to suspend Melaye immediately, citing Article 59(1) of the PDP Constitution, which allows for disciplinary actions to be taken against members.

The suspension follows a letter from the party’s disciplinary committee, dated September 9, 2024, which outlined multiple summons and reminders sent to Melaye. The letter emphasized that despite being given several opportunities to defend himself, Melaye failed to respond, leaving the committee with no choice but to recommend his suspension.

The allegations against the former senator include misuse of party funds and making public statements that were deemed harmful to the party’s reputation. Previous communications, dated August 25 and August 26, 2024, had warned Melaye of the seriousness of the allegations and the importance of his appearance before the disciplinary panel. However, after several extensions and reminders, he still did not attend.

In light of the situation, the PDP leadership in Kogi State has called on all members to respect the party’s internal processes and uphold the principles of unity and discipline. The party emphasized that these measures are necessary to ensure collective success in upcoming elections and to maintain its commitment to effective governance.

Senator Dino Melaye has not yet responded to the suspension at the time of this report.
