Veteran Nollywood actor Richard Mofe-Damijo (RMD) recently shared some advice with comedian-turned-filmmaker Basketmouth in an Instagram video.

While it seemed like an effort to promote Basketmouth’s upcoming movie ‘A Ghetto Love Story’, the post, however, sparked renewed interest in the tense relationship between Basketmouth and fellow comedian AY Makun.

In the video, RMD congratulated Basketmouth on his leap into the film industry but emphasized that filmmaking requires more than just talent. He advised Basketmouth to seek mentorship from established figures in Nollywood to ensure his success. However, it was RMD’s mention of AY Makun that noticeably changed the tone of the conversation.

RMD listed major industry players like Funke Akindele, Mo Abudu, and Kunle Afolayan as examples of people Basketmouth should approach for guidance. Basketmouth appeared receptive, nodding along in agreement. But when RMD added AY Makun to the list of influential figures, Basketmouth’s facial expression shifted, hinting at the unresolved tension between the two comedians, whose feud has been well-known for years.

RMD had said: “Congratulations on your new film, ‘A Ghetto Love Story’. I wanted to reach out and give you some advice. You are stepping into a space where people have already established themselves. Hold your ground.”

He continued: “When you enter the film industry, go find the people who have laid the groundwork—Funke Akindele, Mo Abudu, AY Makun, Kunle Afolayan, and others. These are people who have solidified their place. You need to connect with them and learn.”

Although Basketmouth remained composed, the mention of AY appeared to momentarily unsettle him, a subtle but noticeable reaction that did not escape the attention of viewers. This instantly reignited public curiosity about the longstanding rift between the two comedians.

RMD’s advice, though well-meaning, unintentionally put AY’s name back in the spotlight, drawing attention to their unresolved issues. The tension between Basketmouth and AY has lingered for years, with both parties steering clear of discussing their differences in public. However, RMD’s suggestion to approach AY for mentorship brought those differences into focus again.

RMD went on to emphasize that filmmaking is not like stand-up comedy: “This is not comedy. This is a different game. When you step into filmmaking, you need to show respect for those who have been here before. Call them and ask questions, learn from them.”

While the Instagram video appeared to be a well-intended promotional move for ‘A Ghetto Love Story’, it also opened a conversation about whether Basketmouth is willing to reconcile with AY, especially now that their paths might cross more frequently in the film industry.

Fans are now left wondering if Basketmouth will take RMD’s advice to heart and reach out to the industry veterans mentioned—particularly AY—despite their complicated past. As both comedians transition into filmmaking, their ability to put aside their differences could shape the next chapter of their careers.
