Oshiomhole Oba Of Benin

Edo North senator Adams Oshiomhole has explained why he knelt before the Oba of Benin, Oba Ewuare II following the visit of the All Progressives Congress, APC campaign team to the palace following the victory of Senator Monday Okpbebholo.

Speaking on Channels TV’s ‘Politics Today’, Oshiomhole stated that he deeply respects the traditional authority of the Benin people, which is why he showed humility by kneeling before the monarch.

During the interview, Oshiomhole also criticized the outgoing governor, Godwin Obaseki, describing his tenure as a failure.

He noted that Obaseki couldn’t identify any primary or secondary school he built in his eight years as governor. “I’m excited that we won, and I have the rare privilege of presiding over the affairs of Edo State as governor for eight years. I know what the state was when I left and what it is today. Many people believe I should be blamed for Obaseki’s failures and poor performance,” he said.

Oshiomhole highlighted various promises made by Obaseki that never materialized, including a proposed airport in Edo North and a seaport in Gelegele. He recalled that even former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo was brought in for the groundbreaking ceremony of an industrial park that remains undeveloped. “If you go there now, the areas are inhabited by lizards and snakes,” he remarked.

Oshiomhole further criticized Obaseki for compromising drainage projects that were meant to prevent flooding in Benin City. He added that the rainy season exposed the failures of the current administration, as people were unable to leave their homes due to flooding.

Addressing his respect for the traditional institution, Oshiomhole said, “As a former Governor of Edo State, I understand and respect the institution of the Oba of Benin and all the royal fathers of Edo State. I always kneel before the Oba and will continue to do so, even when the current Oba asked me not to. A father is always a father.”
