Shock As Judge Steps Down From Kanu’s Trial During Court Session

Nnamdi Kanu peace

Federal High Court Judge, Justice Binta Nyako, has officially recused herself from the ongoing trial of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

The decision by Justice Binta Nyako was announced during Tuesday’s court session after Kanu expressed his loss of confidence in her ability to preside over the case impartially.

Kanu, who has been at the center of a high-profile legal battle, directly addressed Justice Nyako during the hearing, stating that he no longer trusted her handling of the case. Following this, Justice Nyako chose to withdraw from the trial, acknowledging the defendant’s concerns.

Her withdrawal raises the possibility of a reassignment of the case to another judge, as the legal proceedings against Kanu continue. Though Justice Nyako did not explicitly state the reason for her decision, it is common practice for judges to step aside in cases where a conflict of interest or perceived bias is present.

The move has drawn significant attention, as Kanu’s case remains one of Nigeria’s most controversial legal and political battles, stemming from his leadership of the separatist IPOB movement and his calls for the independence of Biafra.

This development further complicates the already contentious trial, with many now awaiting the next steps in the legal process.
