The former Commissioner for Rural Infrastructure in Kano State, Musa Illiyasu Kwankwaso, has criticized the Governor of Zamfara State, Dauda Lawal, over a recent report submitted to the National Security Adviser (NSA) concerning Defense Minister, Bello Matawalle.

Recall that Governor Lawal had accused Matawalle of sponsoring bandits and hindering efforts to resolve the insecurity in Zamfara.

In response to these allegations, Matawalle stated that he had sworn with the Holy Qur’an during his tenure as governor from 2019 to 2023 to deny any involvement. He pointed out that, unlike him, Lawal and other politicians in the state refused to take the same oath to support their accusations.

In a statement released on Wednesday, Kwankwaso described Governor Lawal’s stance on banditry as a distraction from the real issues. He praised Matawalle’s reputation and stated, “Matawalle’s records and background are impeccable, and his appointment as minister is a testament to his integrity.”

Kwankwaso urged Governor Lawal to collaborate with the federal government and the Defense Minister to tackle banditry in Zamfara and the broader Northern Nigeria region instead of politicizing the matter. He called for more patriotism and unity in addressing security challenges in the region for the benefit of everyone.

“Leaders should shun divisive tendencies and work together to solve the region’s challenges,” Kwankwaso emphasized in his statement. He reiterated that the governor’s actions seemed intended to distract from the progress made in combating bandits and other criminal activities in the area.
