Nigeria Braces For Protest As Sowore Defies Warnings

Former presidential candidate and activist, Omoyele Sowore, has vowed to proceed with the October 1 nationwide protest, aimed at addressing the growing economic and social hardships in Nigeria.

This declaration by Sowore to go ahead with the October 1 protest is in defiance of stern warnings issued by the Federal Government and the Nigerian Police Force.

Taking to his social media platform on Monday, Sowore confirmed that the October 1 protest will go ahead as planned across various states, with the main event taking place at Eagles Square, Abuja. He emphasized that the demonstration is a response to the widespread devastation, hunger, insecurity, and economic hardship that Nigerians are currently facing.

“The protests will hold across all parts of Nigeria because the scale of the devastation, hunger, insecurity, and hardship that this government has unleashed on Nigerians is national,” Sowore stated.

The activist, who is one of the key organizers, explained that the recent fuel price hikes, the sharp devaluation of the naira, and skyrocketing market prices have created unbearable living conditions for millions of Nigerians. Sowore argued that the government’s inability to address these issues has left citizens with no choice but to take to the streets for the October 1 protest.

Sowore also highlighted other pressing concerns, including the takeover of communities by bandits and severe flooding affecting several cities across the country for the decision to protest on the country’s 64th Independence Day anniversary on October 1. He questioned why the government is surprised that Nigerians want to express their frustrations.

“We will not be deterred by threats or violence. Our only weapon is truth, and no amount of force will prevent us from speaking truth to power,” Sowore asserted, responding to warnings from authorities.

Despite concerns raised by the Federal Government and the Nigerian Police Force about public safety and potential disruptions, Sowore reassured the public that the protests will be peaceful. He also noted that organizers are fully prepared and will not back down.

“We are fully prepared. Our organizers are on the ground and will not be going into hiding. These are revolutionary times; Nigerians will hit the streets en masse starting from 7 am on October 1,” he said.

The October 1 protest is expected to be one of the largest demonstrations against the current administration’s policies, and Sowore remains resolute that the voices of Nigerians must be heard.
