Ondo REC on bias claims

The Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) for Ondo State, Oluwatoyin Babalola, has denied allegations that she is supporting a specific candidate in the upcoming governorship election scheduled for November 16.

She made this statement in response to accusations made by the Ondo State Youth Vanguard during a protest at the state headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The youth group accused the REC of being affiliated with the All Progressives Congress (APC) and holding secret meetings with Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa ahead of the election. They submitted a petition to the INEC National Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, calling for Babalola’s removal.

In her response, Babalola dismissed these allegations, saying they were false and baseless. She emphasized that she does not have any preferred candidate for the election and that her interactions are strictly professional with all political parties.

“It is not true; I didn’t hold any clandestine meeting with the governor or any member of any political party,” Babalola stated. “In INEC, we relate with all political parties. I have been operating an open-door policy and I don’t have any preferred candidate for the election. I am not a member of any political party.”

Babalola reassured the public that the election would be conducted fairly and transparently. “In this election, we will ensure every vote counts, and I promise, there won’t be any form of bias. The election will be free, fair, and credible,” she added.

The REC concluded by stating that INEC is committed to maintaining neutrality and conducting a credible election process in the state.
