Wike end

The successful conclusion of the local government election in Rivers State on Saturday, October 5, 2024 was on Sunday morning being celebrated by critics of Nyesom Wike as the beginning of the end of his political career.

However, some supporters of the former governor who demolished opposition to foist Siminalayi Fubara as his successor were unfazed saying that the local government election conducted on Saturday to displace Wike from prominence in the grassroots would not stand nor end his political ascendancy.

GWG.ng reports that the election of local government chairmen and councilors in the 23 local government areas of the state for the first time in nine years puts political actors not aligned to Wike in direct control of the grassroots in the state.

In that position, they can cut the influence of the minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT.

Ahead of the election, Wike who controls the official structures of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP and the All Progressives Congress, APC had almost put Governor Siminalayi Fubara to a precipitous end by mobilizing state institutions in Abuja and the judiciary to derail the poll.

The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC upon a court order said it would not give the voters’ register to the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission, RVISEC.

The police also interestingly said that it would not partake in the election upon the same contentious court order.

Whatever, the election proceeded and the results were declared on Saturday.

The outcome of the election was on Sunday morning being celebrated as the end of the Wike era in Rivers State. However, many are quick to caution that the celebration could still be premature as they note that Wike is a dogged political actor and that claiming his end could be far-fetched.

GWG.ng gathered some of the reactions on social media including a replay of a thanksgiving that featured Wike.
