Breaking: June 12 INEC Commissioner Passes Away
Ambassador Ahmed Alghazali, a former National Commissioner of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and seasoned diplomat, has passed away at the age of 84.
Alghazali, who once served as Nigeria’s ambassador to both Iran and Saudi Arabia, died after a lifetime of service to the nation.
He played a significant role in the nation’s electoral history, having been an INEC commissioner during the June 12, 1993, presidential election—a vote that was controversially annulled by then Head of State, General Ibrahim Babangida.
In addition to his INEC tenure, Alghazali held prominent positions within the Nigerian civil service, including serving as Permanent Secretary and Head of the Borno State Civil Service.
Before retiring in 2011, he also chaired the Federal Civil Service Commission, further cementing his legacy as a dedicated public servant.
The news of his passing was shared by one of his sons, Abdulhamid Al-Gazali, through social media. According to the family, Ambassador Alghazali will be laid to rest today at the Gazali Family Masjid in Fezzan Ward, Maiduguri, following Islamic burial rites.
Ambassador Alghazali’s passing marks the end of an era for a man who played key roles in both the diplomatic and administrative sectors of Nigeria. He leaves behind a legacy of service, leadership, and dedication to his country.
