Some sports journalists traveling to Uyo, the capital of Akwa Ibom State, to cover the Super Eagles’ match against the Knights of Libya have reportedly been kidnapped by gunmen in Anambra State.

The sports journalists were reportedly kidnapped in Isseke, a notorious community within the Ihiala Local Government Area of Anambra State. Though the incident has been confirmed by the police the exact details of how the travelling sports journalists were kidnapped have not been fully disclosed.

According to a report by The Nation, the exact timing of the incident remains unclear, with some sources stating it occurred on Wednesday, while others suggest it happened early Thursday morning. The journalists were en route to cover the Super Eagles’ African Cup of Nations qualifier match, scheduled for today at Uyo Stadium.

Tragically, one of the kidnapped individuals has reportedly been killed, though the fate of the other victims remains uncertain.

Tochukwu Ikenga, spokesperson for the state police command, confirmed the abduction and stated that security forces had launched a joint operation in the area to locate the missing individuals. “As I speak to you, a joint operation is ongoing. We are, however, not sure if they are in captivity or were able to escape,” Ikenga said.

At the time of the report, no details had been provided regarding the fate of the kidnapped sports journalists. The incident has sent shockwaves through the media and sports community, casting a shadow over the anticipated football match in Uyo.
