Akpabio, Oshiomhole Mock One Another Over Rebellion By Successors (Video)

In a heated debate on the floor of the Senate, Senate President Godswill Akpabio took a swipe at Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki, accusing him of turning against Senator Adams Oshiomhole who brought him to political light.

Speaking during the Senate session on Thursday and addressing Senator Adams Oshiomhole, Akpabio remarked, “The man you brought in as governor (Obaseki) has turned against you and against democracy.”

However, Senator Adams Oshiomhole, the former Governor of Edo State and one-time ally of Obaseki, was quick to clarify the situation to Akpabio.

“Just for the record, I didn’t bring him in; he was elected, but I supported him, just the way you supported Governor Udom,” Oshiomhole retorted, referencing Akpabio’s own political backing of Governor Udom Emmanuel of Akwa Ibom State.

Oshiomhole’s role in Obaseki’s political rise dates back to 2016 when, despite opposition from key All Progressives Congress (APC) leaders who favored other candidates like Pius Odubu, Oshiomhole threw his weight behind Obaseki. With his support, Obaseki triumphed over Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu, who was the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate at the time.

However, the relationship between Oshiomhole and Obaseki soured two years into the latter’s administration when APC party leaders grew frustrated with Obaseki for allegedly sidelining them. Attempts by Oshiomhole to mediate and restore harmony failed as Obaseki stood firm, stating that he would not allow any political godfather to control or blackmail him.

This marked the beginning of a prolonged feud between the two. Ahead of the 2024 governorship election, Obaseki sought reconciliation with Oshiomhole, hoping to secure support for his preferred successor, Asue Ighodalo. Despite these efforts, Ighodalo lost the election, leaving the tensions between Obaseki and Oshiomhole unresolved.

The Senate exchange reignited the spotlight on their political rivalry, reminding Nigerians of the bitter fallout between the two once-close allies.
