Why Two Top Bishops Are Retiring From Oyedepo’s Winners Chapel

In a historic moment for the Living Faith Church Worldwide, also known as the Liberation Commission, Bishops David Olatunji Abioye and Thomas Aremu, Vice Presidents of the church, are set to retire this October after more than three decades of dedicated service.

The decision of Abioye to retire marks the first time in the church’s history that senior pastors will be publicly celebrated upon their exit, in accordance with the church’s updated constitution, known as the Mandate.

Bishop Thomas Aremu’s valedictory service is scheduled for Tuesday, October 15, 2024, at Living Faith Church, Basorun, Ibadan, Oyo State. Three days later, on Friday, October 18, 2024, Bishop David Abioye’s farewell service will take place in Durumi, Abuja.

Bishop Abioye, who first met Bishop David Oyedepo in 1979, has been a steadfast partner in the ministry. He was one of the five pioneering pastors sent out in 1987 to establish branches of the church and, at the age of 32, became the youngest bishop in recorded history when he was consecrated in 1993 at Garden of Faith, Barnawa, Kaduna.

Bishop Thomas Aremu, who left his role as an accountant to join the ministry full-time, has been equally instrumental in the church’s growth. He was one of the seven bishops consecrated in November 1999 at Garden of Faith, Kaduna, and is the only one who has remained in active service until this day.

Their retirement follows new guidelines within the church’s constitution, which now sets the retirement age at 58, down from the previous 60 years. The revision also stipulates that, after the Founder, future leaders of the Commission will serve for a term of seven years, with the possibility of one renewal, subject to approval by the Board of Trustees.

This momentous occasion ushers in a new phase in the governance of the church, which, despite being less than 50 years old, continues to grow rapidly. The retirement of these esteemed leaders marks not only the end of an era but also the beginning of a new chapter for the Living Faith Church Worldwide.
