As the October 24 National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) approaches, the race for the next national chairman is intensifying, with three prominent figures.

Former Senate President David Mark, former Benue State Governor Gabriel Suswam, and the Director General of the PDP Governors’ Forum, Dr. Emmanuel Agbo have emerged as leading contenders for the national leadership position.

Speculation is rife within the party as its leadership prepares to elect a new national chairman to steer the PDP through its next phase. Each candidate brings unique experience and leadership qualities, making the contest one to watch closely.

David Mark, a seasoned politician and former Senate President, is reportedly being backed by a powerful group of retired military generals. However, it remains unclear whether Mark has officially decided to contest for the national leadership position. His potential candidacy has stirred considerable interest due to his extensive experience and long-standing influence within the PDP.

Senator Gabriel Suswam, another top contender, has been vocal about his commitment to restoring unity and integrity to the party. He emphasized that his ambition is not a “do-or-die affair,” but rather a mission to guide the party toward positive change.

Dr. Emmanuel Agbo, the third major contender, is a former deputy national secretary of the PDP and a one-time chairman of the party in Benue State. Agbo has garnered significant support from various state party leaders, owing to his previous role as chairman of the state chairmen. As the current Director General of the PDP Governors’ Forum, he enjoys backing from several state governors, further strengthening his bid.

In addition to the top three contenders, Conrad Utaan, a younger candidate with fresh ideas and also from Benue State, has also entered the race. Utaan has gained support from newly elected local government chairmen in Benue State, positioning him as a strong challenger due to his age and innovative approach to addressing party issues.

As the NEC meeting draws closer, all eyes are on the PDP to see which candidate will emerge victorious and lead the party into its next chapter. With each contender offering a distinct vision for the future, the decision is poised to shape the party’s trajectory in the coming years.
