EFCC Radio Presenter During Live Broadcast

Urban Radio 94.5FM, based in Enugu, has accused the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) of disrupting a live broadcast to arrest one of its presenters, Favour Ekoh, on Monday evening. The station claims the EFCC operatives, who were armed, stormed the studio at around 6:45 pm during its “Prime Time” programme.

In a statement released on Tuesday, the station’s management alleged that the EFCC agents “barged” into the studio, interrupted the ongoing broadcast, “abducted” the presenter, and confiscated communication equipment without providing any explanation.

“Armed men identifying as EFCC barged into the studio, interrupted the live programme, forcefully abducted our presenters, and took away communication equipment for reasons they refused to disclose,” the statement said. The station promised to provide updates as more information becomes available.

However, EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale denied the allegations of invasion and equipment seizure, confirming only the arrest of Favour Ekoh. He stated that the presenter had ignored several previous invitations for questioning in connection with her alleged involvement in a Ponzi scheme that defrauded 103 Nigerians.

“It is not true that our people invaded the station,” Oyewale clarified. “We only arrested Favour Ekoh, and no equipment was seized. She had been invited several times, but after failing to appear, she was traced to the radio station,” he added.

Oyewale explained that Ekoh’s arrest was carried out under an official warrant, as she was suspected of defrauding Nigerians through the Ponzi scheme.

The incident has sparked concerns over press freedom and the manner in which the arrest was conducted, with both the radio station and EFCC providing conflicting accounts of the event.
