President Bola Tinubu has called on university-based unions and staff to abandon the old practice of resorting to strikes that disrupt academic activities in public institutions.

He made this appeal on Tuesday during the 39th Convocation Ceremony of the University of Ilorin.

Represented by the Minister of State for Education, Hon. Yusuf Tanko Sununu, Tinubu emphasized the importance of peace for national progress, particularly within the educational sector. He urged unions to prioritize dialogue and constructive engagement instead of industrial actions that hinder learning.

“Our universities, like the nation, need peace to ensure prosperity. Gone are the days when institutions were closed over issues that could be resolved through constructive engagement. We have grown beyond that, and we should not return to that path. We would not allow that to happen again,” Tinubu said.

The president assured that his administration is committed to maintaining open lines of communication between the federal government and universities. To underscore this, he highlighted the inauguration of the 2009 Re-negotiation Committee led by Dr. Yayale Ahmed. The committee aims to foster honest and transparent discussions to address pressing issues in the education sector.

In his remarks, the Pro-Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Surveyor Abiodun Aluko, lauded the institution for retaining its position as Nigeria’s most sought-after university. Aluko also commended Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq for his administration’s infrastructural development around the university, specifically the construction of a flyover bridge that has significantly improved traffic flow.

Governor AbdulRazaq, represented by the Executive Chairman of the Kwara State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Prof. Shehu Adaramaja, encouraged the graduates to embrace innovation and contribute to nation-building.

The Vice-Chancellor of the University, Prof. Wahab Egbewole, reflected on the university’s legacy, emphasizing that it has produced distinguished Nigerians who have made significant contributions to national development. He urged the new graduates to continue learning, unlearning, and relearning, reminding them that their education at UNILORIN is just the beginning of their journey toward global competitiveness.

The 39th Convocation Ceremony saw the conferment of degrees and recognition of outstanding graduates, reaffirming UNILORIN’s commitment to academic excellence.
