A video capturing a University of Lagos (Unilag) lecturer’s unconventional teaching method during an online maths class has gone viral. GWG.ng reports that the video has sparked widespread discussions about the challenges of virtual learning.

The controversy over the online maths class came to light after a Unilag student shared the university’s decision to temporarily switch to online classes due to ongoing renovations. Expressing relief at avoiding the struggle of commuting, the student posted: “Unilag wan do online classes till further notice. Very good. I’m not ready to be dragging backseat of cab with you people.”

In response, another social media user shared a clip from an online math class where the lecturer appeared to struggle with clear explanations. In the video, the lecturer’s vague instructions like, “You add this one to this one, you get that one,” left students—and viewers—baffled.

Many users highlighted the difficulties students face in understanding lessons without direct in-person guidance, especially in technical subjects like mathematics.

The controversy over the unconventional online maths class is coming in the wake of moves by the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics to commence a nationwide industrial action over unpaid entitlements among other reasons.
