A prominent activist and leader of the Bring Back Our Girls Movement, Aisha Yesufu, has openly criticized Nigerian singer Seun Kuti, calling him “a product of Fela’s indiscipline.” Her remarks came in response to Seun’s recent comments regarding her advocacy for women’s freedom in Nigeria.

The exchange began when Seun Kuti disagreed with Aisha’s stance on women’s liberation, suggesting that she should “liberate yourself from your hijab first.” Seun’s comments seemed to imply that her advocacy was inconsistent with her choice to wear the hijab, a traditional Islamic covering.

In a series of posts on her X handle, Aisha responded pointedly, saying, “Seun Kuti wants to trend with my name since his karaoke business no make him blow alongside those wey dey do music.” She continued, “I don’t blame him! If only his father had discipline over his loin, we wouldn’t be dealing with the consequences of that lack of discipline.”

Aisha didn’t stop there. She added that Seun’s reputation largely stems from his connection to his legendary father, Afrobeat pioneer Fela Kuti, rather than his own accomplishments. “Person wey people dey book im show because dem wan see a caricature of his father even if they can’t have the real thing,” she wrote, emphasizing her belief that Seun’s popularity relies on the public’s nostalgia for Fela.

Seun Kuti, known for his outspoken nature and activism, is Fela Kuti’s youngest son and has continued to advocate for social and political change in Nigeria. However, his criticism of Aisha’s advocacy for women’s rights appears to have sparked this intense exchange, drawing attention to the contrasting views between the two prominent figures.
