TCN national grid collapse

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has provided an explanation for the recent collapse of the national power grid, which occurred on Tuesday, marking the 10th incident of 2024. The outage left many Nigerians without electricity.

In a statement released on Tuesday afternoon, several hours after the grid failure, TCN’s General Manager of Public Affairs, Ndidi Mbah, stated that the collapse happened at around 1:52 pm. According to Mbah, data from the National Control Centre (NCC) indicated that while many areas were impacted, part of the grid remained unaffected by the outage.

Mbah explained that the collapse was caused by “line tripping,” where a sequence of line and generator failures disrupted stability in the grid. TCN engineers quickly began efforts to restore bulk power to the areas affected by this partial disruption.

Offering reassurance, Mbah stated, “TCN engineers are already working to quickly restore bulk power supply to the states affected by the partial disturbance. Presently, bulk power supply has been restored to Abuja, at 2:49 pm, and we are gradually restoring to other parts of the country.”

In her message to Nigerians, she expressed regret for the disruption, saying, “We sincerely apologize for every inconvenience this may cause our electricity customers.”
