18-Year University Entry Age Education Minister

The new Minister of Education, Dr. Morufu Olatunji Alausa, has announced a change in the entry age for university admission, reversing the previous policy that required students to be at least 18 years old.

his policy, which was introduced by the former Minister of Education, Professor Tahir Mamman, had sparked debate.

Upon assuming office, Alausa explained to reporters that the 18-year age policy was problematic for the government. By lowering the age limit back to 16, he hopes to help reduce the number of out-of-school children in Nigeria. He clarified that “gifted children” may still be granted special exceptions to enter earlier.

The minister also introduced a new vision for Nigeria’s education, aiming for a balance of 80 percent practical training and 20 percent theoretical or classroom-based learning.

According to Alausa, this shift will better prepare students for employment, as practical education can address Nigeria’s high unemployment rate. He emphasized that simply graduating students each year without job prospects is unsustainable.

Alausa also mentioned plans for the government to collaborate with private sector partners to enhance training programs, allowing students to fully develop their skills and potential.

Alausa, who previously served as Minister of State for Health, took on his new role following a recent cabinet reshuffle.
