Former Nigerian Vice President and recent Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, has praised the electoral process of the United States following the outcome of its recent presidential election.

The election saw Republican candidate Donald Trump defeat sitting Vice President Kamala Harris, reclaiming the presidency as the 47th President of the United States.

In a congratulatory message, Atiku lauded Americans for their steadfast commitment to democracy, which, he noted, once again underscores the power of the people’s voice on the global stage.

He highlighted the resilience demonstrated by Trump, calling his political journey “a lesson in the art of rising after every fall.” Trump, who lost to Joe Biden in 2020, has now secured a historic comeback against Harris in the 2024 race.

Reflecting on Trump’s victory, Atiku noted, “This triumph, without a doubt, will stand as an enduring testament to the resilience and vitality of the democratic process – a timeless reminder that democracy, with all its trials and tribulations, remains a force for good in the world.”

The Nigerian politician also referenced his own journey through various political challenges, having contested for Nigeria’s presidency several times. His experiences included running as the Action Congress candidate in 2007, contesting in PDP primaries against Goodluck Jonathan in 2011, and later competing as the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate in 2015 primaries, where he lost to Muhammadu Buhari. Returning to the PDP, he emerged as the party’s candidate for the 2019 and 2023 elections, finishing second in the latter to Bola Tinubu.

Drawing a parallel between the electoral processes in the U.S. and Nigeria, Atiku emphasized the importance of a credible electoral system, urging President Trump to remain an advocate for free and fair elections worldwide, including in Nigeria. He called on Trump to uphold democratic principles and counter anti-democratic forces globally.

Concluding his message, Atiku expressed his admiration for the American people, stating, “The lesson for us in Nigeria is the integrity of the process that ensures a credible outcome. It is the expectation of every Nigerian that the Trump administration will stand resolute in ensuring free and fair elections in Nigeria and other places in the world.”
