A 38-year-old suspect, Peter Samuel, admitted on Wednesday to killing an Okada rider, Rafiu Akao, in Oke-Oyi, a town in the Ilorin East Local Government Area of Kwara State.

The incident took place in the Asunlere area on November 4, 2024.

Speaking to journalists after being presented alongside four others involved in the case by Kwara State’s police commissioner, Victor Olaiya, Samuel said, “I used a cutlass to cut the head of the Okada rider” during an attempt to steal the deceased’s newly purchased motorcycle. Samuel explained that he was persuaded to commit the crime by a person known as ‘Oga,’ who promised that the act would bring them substantial financial gain.

The other four individuals linked to the incident are Jeremiah Tiozinda, 26; Sunday Agbenke, 40; Yusuf Abdulkareem, 22; and Jaiyeola Fatai, 40. The police recovered an Itel Android phone and a motorcycle as evidence.

Describing the incident, Commissioner Olaiya stated, “On November 4, 2024, at about 2109 hrs, a report was received from residents of the Asunlere community in Oke-Oyi, Ilorin, Kwara State.” He continued, “Three men, Abdulrasheed Ola Sheu, Ismail Muhammed, and others, came to the Oke-Oyi Police Division to report that a headless body was found near a stream in the area.”

Once the report was made, detectives were sent to the scene and took photographs. The images showed severe injuries around the neck, indicating that the head had been cut off. The body was then moved to the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital morgue for an autopsy.

During the investigation, detectives discovered an Itel Android phone at the crime scene, suspected to belong to one of the attackers, and the victim’s motorcycle. The deceased’s phone was also found in his possession.

The police intensified their search for the suspects, which led to progress by November 6, 2024. Based on solid intelligence, they arrested Peter Samuel, Jeremiah Tiozinda, and Sunday Agbenke in separate locations. Commissioner Olaiya added, “Both individuals confessed to committing the crime. The recovered android phone was confirmed to belong to suspect Peter Samuel, who was planning to flee the state. During interrogation, the suspects revealed that they threw the victim’s severed head into a nearby river.”

The case has been handed over to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for a more detailed investigation. The police commissioner assured that more updates would follow as the investigation continues and confirmed that the suspects would face trial in court.
