The Nigerian Army has announced that the late Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja, will be laid to rest in Abuja on Friday, November 15, 2024.

This follows President Bola Tinubu’s approval of a state burial to honor the fallen General.

The Army shared details of Lagbaja’s funeral arrangements in a statement released on its official X (formerly Twitter) handle late Tuesday night. According to the schedule signed by Army spokesperson Onyema Nwachukwu, a Service of Songs will be held on Thursday, November 14, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Army Headquarters Garrison Parade Ground, Mogadishu Cantonment, Abuja.

On Friday, November 15, a funeral service will take place at the National Christian Centre in the Central Business District of Abuja, running from 10 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. After the service, Lagbaja will be interred at the National Military Cemetery, with the final rites scheduled between 2 p.m. and 6 p.m.

Moshood Lagbaja, the late General’s elder brother, also confirmed the burial arrangements. Speaking during a condolence visit by the St. Charles Grammar School Osogbo Old Boys Association (SCOBA) in Osogbo, Osun State, he noted that while the military would not release his brother’s remains to the family, they assured them of a befitting farewell.

Lieutenant General Lagbaja, appointed Chief of Army Staff by President Tinubu on June 19, 2023, passed away at the age of 56 following a battle with an undisclosed illness. His death has left a void in the Nigerian military, with tributes pouring in from across the country.
