Toke Makinwa on marriage

Nollywood actress Toke Makinwa has shared her desire to remarry. At 40 years old, she believes that marriage is one of the most beautiful things, despite the challenges it can bring.

In an interview on a podcast with British-Nigerian media personality Madame Joyce, Toke spoke about her views on marriage. She explained, “People always think I hate men or that I’m a feminist who criticizes men. I’ve been married before, and I believe marriage is one of the most beautiful institutions.”

Toke also compared marriage to the relationship between siblings. “If your siblings come to visit, the first few days are exciting. You wear matching pyjamas, sleep in the same bed, and catch up on everything. But by the third day, you’re annoyed, asking, ‘Who took my shoes? Where are my earrings? When are you going home?’ That’s how I saw marriage.”

Reflecting on her own past marriage, Toke recalled both good and bad moments. “There were days when I couldn’t wait to tell my ex-husband everything I went through. But then there were other days when I woke up and thought, ‘God, you must hate me for marrying this person. This is hell.’ It didn’t work out many years ago, but I still value the idea of marriage. I do want to get married again.”

Although she hasn’t remarried yet, Toke is not ruling it out. “I’m just taking my time. Maybe it’s not God’s timing yet. When the time comes, I hope I’m not wrinkled,” she joked.

Toke was previously married to businessman Maje Ayida in 2014, but they divorced in 2017. Recently, rumors spread that she had married her longtime partner, Farouk Umar. However, Toke quickly denied these reports, saying they are just “besties” and that the event was actually a thanksgiving celebration, not a wedding.
